In 2020, the Department of Animal Husbandry Services conducted a Stakeholders engagement on the need to promote increased production of a donkey in Nigeria to avert extinction and the recommendations from this meeting was to carry out immediate activities that will be geared toward increasing the production of donkeys and improvement of the socio-economic status of the value chain actors which include identification, profiling, Needs assessment and formation of donkey farmers clusters.  To put an end to the indiscriminate killing of a donkey and actualize the programme the donkey farmers make it a matter of urgency and organized themselves into Cooperatives and also form a National body that will serve the interest of the donkey farmers along the Value Chain. The body came up with the Association of Donkey Breeders, Marketers and Exporters. The association has Sixty four(64) National leadersThirty six (36) State Coordinators including FCT and Six (6) geopolitical Zonal Vice Presidents across the country.

The inauguration took place on  11th August 2022  at ARMTI Guest House, Gudu District, FCT, Abuja and was graced by the Permanent Secretary who was ably represented by the Director of Animal Husbandry Services.

In her speech, she informed them that Donkey Value Chain is domiciled in the Department and requested the Association members to endeavour to work hard to protect the animal from going into extinction. 

The Executive members of the Association took an oath and were sworn in as National Executive members of the Nigeria Association of Donkey Breeders, Marketers and Exporters which was officiated by a Legal Adviser. The legal Adviser reminded them of their responsibilities and requested them to protect the association at all times.

The National President stated the mission of the Association in tackling the extinction of the animal and the economic importance of the Donkey. He said that the Association is currently facing some challenges and requested the intervention of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (FMARD) to support the Association.

The National President of the Association thanked the Honourable Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Permanent Secretary, Director, Animal Husbandry Services and the Deputy Director (Donkey Value Chain Desk Officer) for their strong support in building up the Association.

The Vice President, North-East of the Association, Mr Mohammed Mallam Adam, thanked the newly inaugurated EXCO members and admonished them to make efforts to see that Donkey is protected and requested them to take up the production of Donkey to the level of exportation of the animal to other countries. He commended the efforts of FMARD for their support of the Association
